General Notes: This info came from Bill Zehm email: zehmw@juno.com
Here is the email I got from him concering his source of information and why he worked on this family tree.
Thanks for the contact. As to my relationship to these
people.---- I do genealogy for the fun of it and stated back in the days
when one went to libraries, seached obscure books and even looked in
cemeteries. (Before the computers and the internet made things a lot
easierand also cheaper.) I have always lived in rather isolated places
where libraries were scarce so would work with what might be available
and worked not only my direct lines but also those of my siblings and
thier spouses and those of my childrens spouses.
So in the course of time I got around to that of my brother-in
law, Luther Harris. And he mentioned that he was named for his Great
grandfather, Luther Brawner/Browner. He wasn't sure which it was. Then
in going through some of his mothers things, he found an old tattered
book "The Descendants of Gov Gerrard of KY" This book managed to connect
the Maria Brawner of Carter County, Montana, that was Luther Harris's
grandmother back to the Governor. So he knew I was interested in
genealogy and loaned the book to me, so that although he has no interest
in genealogy, he gave me much of the data that I now have on that line.
Then taking this information I have added additional data from
PeopleSearch and WorldConnect which has brought some of these lines down
to modern times. And BTW, I am always interested in add to this data
base. So that is the source of my information that appears on Ancestry
through its partnership with Rootsweb and its WorldConnect, where I have
submitted my data.

Research Notes: Found Nathan and Susan in the 1870 Census. The name is clearly spelled Brawner but they had it deciphered as Browner for some reason.
Nathan was 29 at the time and Susan was 24...that puts the dates of birth for Nathan as 1841 and for Susan as 1846.
One person was listed as living with them. A male age 17 look like TG Lewis. So I guess one of her brothers or some relative of Susan's was living with them at the time.
The census was taken in Texas Parker Ft Worth...Series: M593 Roll: 1601 Page: 361

>Sug Fitzner - Jun 27, 2004 This is a story that is in either the Palo Pinto County,Texas or Stephens County Texas Book. I do not have either book and can not verify any of this information with sources.
NATHAN BRAWNER and SUSAN ADA LEWIS
Nathan, the son of Luther Brawner and Maria Pacheco Padilla (Garrard) Brawner, was born about 1840 or 1841 in Kentucky. He came with family to Texas in late 1859 or early 1860 (See Luther Brawner). In 1860 he lived with his family in Palo Pinto Co.,Texas.
Nathan married Susan Ada Lewis daughter of James T.Lewis, III and Nancy (McIntosh) Lewis. Susan was born about 1846 in Hyden, Leslie (this should be Perry County) County, Kentucky. The Lewis family came to Texas in 1865 and settled in the SW corner of Parker County. Susan's mother died shortly after they arrived in Texas, and her father died in September 1869. Susan had 8 brothers and 2 sisters.Three of the brothers lived in Palo Pinto Co. William Lewis lived first in Parker County and then in Palo Pinto Co. James Lewis 4th and his wife Hannah settled on Turkey Creek north of Mineral Wells. Allen Lewis married Catherine Frances Brawner, sister of Nathan. They had one son Nathan, born April 3,1869, died July 9,1881. He is buried at Crawford Cemetery.
In 1870 Nathan and Susan lived near her family in the Buckner Community,Parker County,Texas.Later they moved to Palo Pinto County where Nathan homesteaded on Cedar Creek in the early 1870s. There they lived the rest of their lives.
They had three daughters: Amelia Mildred born 1870, died 1942. She married Jess Taylor August 10,1887 in Parker County. Maria Pacheco Padilla "Petch" born June 10,1872, died January 11,1963. She married James McGuffy Reed (see Reed). Nancy died as an infant.
It is believed that Susan died at the birth of Nancy in 1873 or 1874. She was buried in a field near the family home on the banks of Cedar Creek. Later the body was moved to Veals Creek Cemetery. When Susan died all the men in the community took one board from their wagon bed to make a coffin for her. It was made by Mr.Carter of Carter Bend. The coffin was lined with her wedding dress. Petch Reed said she was told the Indians were so close they could hear them hollow.
Nathan continued taking care of his small daughters. He studied law before leaving Kentucky and practiced law and farmed his land.
Nathan's daughter Petch told her children stories of those early years with her father. One was about a time that Nathan had defended and lost the case. He was mad and rode a grey mule through the Court House and shot out the windows. She told of a time her father was sick with a fever and "out of his head". He told the girls to walk the rafters in the house and they did. Then he told them to wash the hands of all the threshers. They thought maybe he wanted his hands washed so washed his hands and also his face in cold water. This helped bring down the fever.
One Christmas he took a possum foot and made tracks in the ashes of the fire place. He told the girls it was Santa's foot tracks. He bought a cap for each girl that year.
Once Nathan broke his leg and learned to knit while he was laid up. Amelia and Petch stayed alone while their father was in the field. One time a rattle snake came near the house. They kept it there by throwing rocks at it until their father came in from the field. He told them never to do that again. Nathan was sleeping outside and saw an Indian steal his favorite horse. As soon as the Indian left Nathan went to the home of Dave Nicklas to get him to find his horse. They never found it.
* Sam Bass and his men were camped on the hill in front of Nathan's home. Sam Bass came to the house to buy some pork. While Nathan was gone for the pork Sam Bass picked up Petch and held her on his lap.
Nathan married Rosa Goforth, and they had one son Albert, Nathan died about 1880 when Amelia was 10 and Petch 8 years old. Nathan must have been a good father to raise the girls who were only 2 and 3 years old when their mother died. Amelia and Petch lived with different members of the family-their grandmother Maria Pacheco Padilla Brawner, Nathan's brother Luther and wife Sally, and Bill Lewis family. The burial place for Nathan is unknown.(Burial is in Crawford Cemetery).
Part of Nathan's homestead is under the waters of the Possum Kingdom State Park.Later this land was owned by John Burgess.
*Sam Bass (1851-1878)
Western outlaw who specialized in train holdups.
Although his career as an outlaw lasted but three years (1875-78), it was sufficiently long to establish Sam Bass as one of the most violent of the Wild West's desperados. Born in Indiana in 1851 and orphaned 13 years later. Sam Bass migrated to Denton,Texas in 1873 and worked in a hotel and as a cowboy and sheriff's deputy. After buying a racehorse in 1875, he began associating with gamblers and horse thieves, and soon Bass was ranging through the West holding up stagecoaches and trains. By 1876 Bass had a gang of his own and, in September,1877, led his men in a holdup of a Union Pacific train near Big Springs,Neb., where they siezed $60,000 in gold. Although some gang members were killed, Bass escaped to Denton to continue his career. In 1878, however Texas Rangers captured one of the outlaw's men and learned of Bass' plan to rob a bank at Round Rock,Texas. There on July 19, lawmen ambushed and mortally wounded the outlaw. (This is the Sam Bass mentioned in the above story telling of his holding Petch on his lap).
Nathan married Susan Ada Lewis about 1870 in Hyden, Leslie, Kentucky.

My Aunt told me that according to family stories Susan Ada Lewis Brawner died in child birth during an indian raid on her wagon train. They took a plank from each wagon and made a coffin for her. They then buried her and the baby in a cornfield so that the indians wouldn't get her and later then retrieved the casket and moved her to Veal creek cemetary...I think that is someplace in Palo Pinto County.

Note:
per conversation with Odile Cormier 7/7/01:
Octavie always wore a corset, a half slip with a drawstring tied on the side, then a whole slip with string at waistline, black stockings, dress down to ankles, little black leather tie shoes. She always wore fabric with little prints. She owned a buggy.
Octavie would collect and sell her eggs. She could sell them at the mercantile 3 miles away or at the general store in Rayne, 10 miles away. She always wanted to go to Rayne to get an extra 2 cents per dozen. She would not go in the car. It took all day, though, to go in the buggy.
Octavie was highly pampered. She wanted her grandkids to wait on her hand and foot. She always had a homeless/orphan girl to live with her and take care of her. She wouldn't drink coffee, but every night before bed she would have hot chocolate with an egg white in it. When the girls were gone, or between girls, Odile(granddaughter) would go take care of Octavie. Octavie insisted that everyone go to bed as soon as it was dark.
Moise, Austin, and Odile would take care of Octavie's garden. It grew very well. They raised corn, peas, and tomatoes. The kids did all the work; Octavie never went beyond the fence.
